CAT PEOPLE (1942)

Movie Review from ElCriticon-AlohaCriticon

Mesmerizing work by the team formed by Val Lewton and Jacques Tourneur (I Walked With A Zombie, The Leopard Man).

A perturbing terror film plenty of suggestions and a rich atmosphere. Simone Simon, the protagonist actress is very suitable for the role due to her feline features.

Brilliant, beautiful movie with shocking moments like the scenes at the swimming pool, the kiss of the psychiatrist and Irina, the entrance at the pet shop or the dinner silenced by the evil glance and voice of another cat woman. These are insidious details of a masterpiece that maintain in every moment its capacity to catch the viewer’s eye. Quite on the contrary, suspense, mystery and attraction are presented in crescendo in an enthralling plot.

Seventy minutes and a low budget to create a fascinating terror film in which not a blood drop is show and the few violent scenes are suggested through lights and shadows games. There was a sequel called The Curse of the Cat People (1944) and a minor remake with Nastassja Kinski directed by Paul Schrader.
