the band the weight single images disco album fotos cover portadaEl grupo canadiense The Band debutó en formato LP en el año 1968 con el LP “Music From Big Pink”, un gran álbum de rock de raíces (influencias folk, country, gospel, blues…) con pintura de Bob Dylan en la portada y producción de John Simon en Capitol. Su principal compositor, el guitarrista Robbie Robertson, escribió “The Weight”, pieza cantada por el batería Levon Helm y el bajista Rick Danko e inspirada, según su autor, por las películas del cineasta Luis Buñuel sobre un viajero visitando Nazareth y encontrándose con variopintos personajes y situaciones… “Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?”, He just grinned and shook my hand, “no” was all he said… When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin’ side by side I said, “Hey, Carmen, come on let’s go downtown” she said “I gotta go but my friend can stick around”… Crazy Chester followed me and he caught me in the fog, he said “I will fix your rack if you’ll take Jack, my dog” I said “Wait a minute, Chester, you know I’m a peaceful man”, He said “That’s okay, boy, won’t you feed him when you can”… Take a load off, Fanny, take a load for free, take a load off, Fanny, and you put the load right on me…

En “El Último Vals”, concierto filmado por Martin Scorsese en una magistral película, The Band interpretaron el tema acompañados por el grupo soul y gospel The Staple Singers.

El tema, probablemente el más conocido de The Band, ha sido versionado en numerosas ocasiones (Spooky Tooth, Aretha Franklin, Joe Cocker…).

En el año 2009 Weezer, el grupo liderado por Rivers Cuomo, añadieron en algunas ediciones “de lujo” de su disco homónimo conocido como “The Red Album” una versión cantada por Cuomo y el bajista Scott Shriner.
