THE KINKS – SOMETHING ELSE (1967)

In 1967, while the rest of the groups were immersed in the psychedelic explosion, The Kinks ( Ray Davies in particular), continued on writing songs according to their inspiration without being influenced by fashions or attitudes.

That year, they shut themselves in the recording studio together with the producer Shel Talmy to tape the thirteen excellent songs that made up the Something Else by the Kinks. It contains one of the most popular and celebrated songs in their production, Waterloo Sunset. Besides this relaxing trip through the sunset in London, The Kinks offer pieces that show the usual irony of his author about social topics, and other characterized by a melancholic and romantic tone.

In the first group we have David Watts, Harry Rag, the baroque Two Sisters ( that narrates in a sarcastic tone the curious tale of two sisters with two different fates) or Situation Vacant, a song about a failed marriage after the intervention of the ambitious mother in law in with skillful piano and Hammond organ sounds.

In the second group, we can find bossanova rhythm in No Return, the sentimental and funny Afternoon Tea or the nostalgia of a summer love in The End of the Season. It is also prominent the celebration of the star in the lysergic theme Lazy Old Sun.

Dave Davies, to a lesser extent than Ray, begins to develop his songwriter career collaborating with his brother in Death of a Clown and writing in solitaire two easy themes, Funny Face and the great Love me Till The Sun Shines.
