CAPTAIN BEYOND – CAPTAIN BEYOND (1972)
Album Review from AlohaPopRock-AlohaCriticon
Influenced by the sounds of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream or Led Zeppelin, the supergroup Captain Beyond (integrated by former members of Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly and Johnny Winter’s Band) developed a short but brilliant career in the first seventies.
They started with the great homonymous LP that presents a set of sensational rock songs with space atmospheres, skillful Rhino Reinhardt’s powerful riffs, a strong rhythmic section by Bobby Caldwell and bassist Lee Norman and a forceful vocal expression by Rod Evans who, together with Caldwell, composes all the tracks of the album.
This masterpiece, with the artworks created by Joe Garnett, was underrated in his period because of the lack of promotional support of Capricorn label. But it is essential for any follower of rock with progressive features who will, sure, enjoy songs as Dancing Madly Backwards (On a Sea Of Air), Mesmerization Eclipse or Raging River Of Fear.
